This activity is about installation (first fix) of frames within systems for windows, doors or screens ready to receive fire-resistant glazing. This includes completing the process from being able to read and use specifications to completing final inspections. This requires understanding of the important factors involved in the installation of frames for fire-rated windows, doors or screens including underpinning requirements relating to system types and regulations, standards and guidelines. This could be carried out during new construction or during change of use.

You must:

  • Know that the installation of fire resistant glazing systems is informed by regulation, standards, codes of practice and supporting evidence
    • Including: - the Building Safety Act - fire test standards - fire test reports and classifications and their field of application - specific fields of application in third party assessments - building regulation guidance (e.g. Approved Documents) - general product safety regulations (GPSR)
  • Understand the reasons for using fire resistant glazing systems as opposed to standard glazing systems
    • To include: - how fire resistant glazing impedes the development and progress of a fire and protects people and property - why standard glass and glazing systems are not appropriate for use in fire resistant applications
  • Understand the importance of the 'Responsible NO'
    • To achieve its full specified fire resistance, the glazing system MUST be installed in full compliance with its supporting evidence and the supporting documentation from the manufacturer, including construction issue drawings, etc., - where this is not possible you should say no to installation. No conflicting instructions should be acted upon under duress without reference to your supervisor or your employing organisation

    • To include: - maintaining a detailed record of the installation for the building manager / accountable person - taking and maintaining a library of photographic and video evidence of critical installation details
  • Understand the manufacturer's requirements for completion of an installation checklist
    • To include: - intermediate stop points requiring a supervisor's sign off - where the installer had the authority to stop and raise a concern before continuing - where photographic and video evidence of critical installation details must be taken and recorded

You must be able to:

  • Record the installation for inclusion in the building's Golden Thread and, where necessary, follow and complete the manufacturers' or relevant third party certifiers' installation checklist
    • Including: - reporting any non-conformances and their rectifications - taking appropriate photos for record - recording appropriate video for record - issuing signed final installation report to confirm compliance

Selecting and using resources for installation of frames for fire resistant glazing

You must:

  • Know the different types and classifications of fire resistant systems and their uses:
    • - difference between insulating and non-insulating framework - distinction and relevance of the framework classification (e.g. 'E' versus 'EI')
  • Know how to select the correct type of fire stopping and /or sealant to use to seal between the fire rated screen, window or door frame and the supporting construction
    • To include: - The importance of using the material specified on the construction issue drawings, job specification sheet and manufacturers' instructions - types of firestopping/sealant - how different types of fire sealant react under fire conditions - the consequences of not using the specified sealant

You must be able to:

  • Comply with all regulations or standards, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and codes of practice including health and safety
  • Identify and select materials crucial to the compliant installation of the glazing framework in line with regulatory requirements and specification sheets
    • To include: - fixings - packers to fixing locations (material, size and thickness) - abutment infill and sealing materials - door framework (where multiples are similar in size and appearance)
  • Identify and reject those same materials which, where damaged and if used, could risk failure to achieve the specified fire resistance

You must:

  • Understand how to recognise a compliant supporting construction, on all sides of the aperture, by comparison with the details given on, for example:
    • - the construction issue drawings - the job specification sheet

You must be able to:

  • Check and confirm the correct installation position for the frame within the screen, window or door relative to the information provided in the:
    • - construction issue drawings - setting out plans - job specification sheet
  • Check and confirm the frame for the fire resistant glazing in the screen, window or door frame and the respective aperture are compatible for size and fixing locations in line with specifications
  • Check and confirm that the supporting construction is as described in the construction issue drawings or job specification sheet
  • Reject or query supporting constructions which are not, or appear not to be, in accordance with the construction issue drawings or job specification sheet
  • Check and prepare the aperture prior to installation according to the job information provided
    • Including: - construction issue drawings - job specification sheet

Installing frames for fire resistant glazing

You must:

  • Understand how to read and interpret the job specification and construction issue drawings and specific manufacturers' installation instructions
  • Know the required tools, equipment and fixings required to carry out work in a range of substrates
  • Know how to install the fire resistant framing system according to the project information
    • Including: - construction issue drawings - job specification sheet - system manufacturers' instructions
  • Know how to position the frame for fire rated glazing in window / door or screen frame into the aperture according to the construction issue drawings or job specification sheet
  • Understand the importance of accurate installation
    • Including: - plumbness of frame system - straightness (i.e. not twisted) of frame system - number, spacing and type of fixings - connections between framing sections - importance of door alignments, including: door to frame gaps; door do door gaps at meeting stiles; hinge alignments and gapping on welded assemblies; straightness of frame sections (not in twist or deflecting away from door jambs)

You must be able to:

  • Select the required tools and equipment required to correctly install the glazing system framework
  • Install the frame, ensuring that;
    • - all frame junctions are tight and correctly secured - all required fixings are in place and secure - perimeter gaps to the supporting construction are within the acceptable margins according to the construction issue drawings or job specification sheet and the manufacturers' instructions - door to frame gaps are within the acceptable margins according to the manufacturers' instructions - labelling where required by the manufacturer is attached
