This activity is about supervising firestopping teams on site installing protection to electrical fittings such as sockets, switches and light fittings, also referred to as partial penetrations. This includes arranging for work to take place at site, allocating individuals to carry out work, ensuring that the appropriate resources are available to installation teams, resolving problems and communicating information about the progress of works. It also includes monitoring the quality of firestopping installations as they are being carried out, to ensure that the work of firestopping teams complies with the requirements set out within the project specification.

    • To include: Compartmentation; How firestopping impedes fire to protect structures and people
  • Know the materials that services are commonly made from and their implications for use of firestopping products

  • Understand the importance of considering both firestopping product manufacturers' and system owners' guidance when installing firestopping
    • The system owner is the organisation which owns the test evidence and design for the system to which the firestopping is to be installed (e.g. fire resisting ducts, dampers or flues). For example, where firestopping is required to fire resisting ducts or dampers, the duct or damper manufacturer's guidance will be required to determine the correct firestop system for use

  • Ensure appropriate method statements, risk assessments and work instructions are being followed by team members installing protection to electrical fittings
  • Ensure that the correct quality and quantity of resources are being used in the installation of protection to electrical fittings
  • Ensure that installation of protection to electrical fittings is being carried out in line with manufacturers' and system owners' instructions
    • The system owner is the organisation which owns the test evidence design for the system to which firestopping is to be installed.

  • Support team members to take corrective action where incorrect installation of protection to electrical fittings is identified
